Summary:

A long time ago, young Natsume Takashi discovered he had the ability to see spirits and youkai—an ability inherited from his late grandmother Reiko. After her death, Reiko passed on to her grandson the Book of Friendship, which is a notebook containing the names of youkai that Reiko had collected to serve her. The Book of Friends is a treasure in the spirit world, and it is because of this that Takashi is constantly "haunted" by ghosts. Although Reiko was the one who made the contract and imprisoned the souls, her grandson Takashi was the one who broke the contract and released the souls who came to him for help. But there are evil youkai who still want to kill him at all costs to steal the notebook. At this time, Madara (also known as Nyanko-sensei by Natsume) appeared; he became Natsume's bodyguard and advisor. Although he always pretends to want to take possession of the book, he gradually becomes Natsume Takashi's close companion.
